DIABETES MOTHER ON TRIAL

A mom is on trial for failing to get her 11-year-old diabetic daughter medical treatment because she believed God would heal her.

The jury heard a dramatic 911 call as a family friend vainly performed CPR on the girl, Madeline Neuman.

The child's aunt also called 911:

Caller: "My sister-in-law, she's very religious. She believes in faith instead of doctors. She believes her daughter is in a coma now and she's relying on faith."

"This young girl has diabetes, not a life-threatening illness necessarily, a very treatable form of diabetes...her parents decided to pray on it, and she died," says legal analyst Jami Floyd.

The child's mother, Leilani Neumann, of Weston, Wisconsin has pled not guilty to reckless homicide. She collapsed during the trial and the judge ordered her treated by paramedics in spite of her religious beliefs.

"You can't enjoy religious freedom if you're going to put your child's life at stake, and your fundamental right to parent is not absolute if it's going to endanger your child," Floyd says.
