CELEBRITY INTERVIEW: BEYONCE KNOWLES

MRS. CARTER, AKA BEYONCE, AKS SASHA FIERCE SITS DOWN WITH MARIE CLAIRE MAG FOR AN INTERVIEW. I THINK YOU’LL ENJOY IT.

She Is Legend

Beyoncé Knowles is making the most of her moment, mounting a 110-city tour in 6-inch heels. What keeps her going? The answer is—literally—written on her fingernails.

By Mark Healy

On a bright Friday morning in lower Manhattan, Beyoncé Knowles is dining in a back room of the haute sushi mecca Nobu, which opened early at her request. "I was in bed literally 20 minutes ago," she tells me with a husky, homey laugh. Beyoncé is mostly unadorned — the only jewelry she wears are large leaf-thin filigree earrings that sway lightly beneath a wall of hair. But when she takes her chopsticks and lifts a hunk of sashimi to her lips, I catch a glimpse of some sort of black lettering on the silver acrylic nails on her left hand.

"Can I see?" I ask.

And suddenly Beyoncé becomes bashful. "It's nothing," she says, letting her left hand slip below the table and out of sight. "They're just reminders," she offers.

"Reminders of what, exactly?"

"Happiness," she says, with a coy tilt of her head. "They just make me smile when I'm working."

Lately, Beyoncé has been doing little else. When we meet, she is at the center of a massive 90-person effort to ready and refine her latest world tour, I Am . . ., which will keep her on the road through 2010. In just two weeks, Planet Beyoncé will lift off and begin to orbit the globe, touching down in 110 cities worldwide, and the woman who is its supreme leader and primary life force is busting her iconic ass to make sure it dazzles at every stop along the way. "Fifteen years from now, I want to be able to look back and say, 'Wow. That's where I was at 27,'" she tells me. "'That was my best.'"

CURTAIN UP! SEE THE PHOTOS >> Beyonce debuts outrageous costumes from her tour

Can you really imagine Beyoncé delivering anything less? Her work ethic, her nerve, has always been up to the task; I'd be surprised if there weren't a rehearsal leotard underneath her simple black jeans and lived-in leather jacket. But Beyoncé oozes more than mere focus and competence. "She's a rarity — she just totally gets it," says her longtime creative director, Frank Gatson Jr. "I knew it when I met her when she was 15 years old. I said, 'How can you be so sweet? How can you be so tactful? How can you be so hands-on? What is that?'" It's one of the things that makes Beyoncé special: Beneath the juggernaut facade, there's the hint of a girl who'd just as soon be back in bed with her husband in their apartment nearby.

"Here," she says, finally offering her left hand, and blushing like the newlywed she is. Spelled out on her index, middle, and ring fingers are the appliquéd letters J-A-Y; on the thumb is a mini likeness of Mr. Beyoncé, Jay-Z, the world's preeminent rapper, wearing a cocked Yankees cap and a cocky smile.

Beyoncé giggles at herself. "It's just a silly thing that makes me smile," she repeats. And then she's off to work.

Beyoncé skirts up the Hudson in a helicopter bound for Hartford, CT, where she'll be deposited behind a BMW/Mini dealership in an amphitheater that is the full-service incubator for her world tour. Inside is a re-creation of the extravagant production — the space-age stage craft, the band's three-story risers, the video screen the size of a Dade County McMansion — along with a battalion of headset-wearing pros whose job it is to make the show flawless and spectacular, night after night, from Saskatoon to Osaka. In the mix now, the lady of the house is crouched at the edge of the stage, her booty resting on a pair of 6-inch heels, her arms stretched straight over her knees, mike in hand. Suddenly, her voice comes from every corner of every amp in the massive sound system. "Two times," she calls, and her band responds: Bam. Bam.

"Five times," she demands.

Bam. Bam. Bam. Bam. Bam.

"Seventeen times!" she cries, thrusting her mike overhead in sync with the band. Beyoncé stretches up, takes a long stride across the stage, and launches into the sassy, suggestive "Check on It." "She understands that her time is valuable, so when she comes in the room, she's in it to win it," says Gatson. "She doesn't have the time to learn the choreography in flats, because eventually she's going to have to do it in heels. She feels like she's gotta get to it."

Enter the Makeover Your Wardrobe Sweepstakes for a chance to win $100,000 worth of summer's sizzling new trends - including Beyoncé's favorite pieces from her House of Deréon line.

According to her mother, Tina, "She stays up late reviewing tapes, studying them to make it better. It's hard for me — it's one of the reasons I go on tour. I'm always the person to make her go to bed. I'm still her mother, so I can walk up and close the computer and tell her to go to bed."

But Beyoncé was driven even before she had a reason to be. When she was 9, her parents took her to see Luther Vandross; they half expected her to be curled up in their laps long before the encore, but she was rapt. When Beyoncé was 15 and on the verge of breaking out with Destiny's Child, Tina took the girls to see Janet Jackson. "The others were like, 'That was great,'" Tina remembers, "but Beyoncé was already pulling it apart, trying to figure out what made it good. She said, 'One day I want to have a concert like that.'"

From her perch at the edge of the stage in Hartford, she issues a stream of questions and notes about kinks that need to be worked out. "Can people hear the lyrics enough to sing along?" she wonders. "Is it too crowded up here? Am I missing a chance to connect with the audience a little?" This song needs a segue, that dance needs work, and the jumbo-size close-up of all those hands doing sign language on the big screen is just plain "silly." As for the planned interstitial segment, where the band plays instrumental snippets of "My Neck, My Back (Lick It)," Khia's brazenly candid appreciation of oral sex, it could easily strike the wrong note. No small issue for someone who has thus far managed to strut that fine line between semi-wholesome pop princess and pussycat doll.

"Band!" Beyoncé calls to the fully empowered all-girl group. "Do we need the Khia thing?" "No!" they respond, striking a note for emphasis. "Hell no!" they add. "Yeah, I'm a lady . . ." Beyoncé mutters, almost to herself, and in seconds the band is playing Tom Jones's "She's a Lady" in her honor.

When you see Beyoncé strutting and crouching and shaking her stuff in Barbarella boots, a push-up bra, and what looks to be shimmering shorts for a 9-year-old, it's easy to forget that she's been cranking out girl-powered message music for over a decade. With songs like "Survivor" and "Independent Women," she's taken the usual relationship struggles—money, sex, power—and dragged them out on the dance floor, challenging women to pull their own weight and warning their men not to take them for granted. "I just try to write songs that people are going to have a dialogue about," she tells me, "songs that people are going to feel . . . at dinner, at the club. I want people to have some type of emotion."

Last fall, in the guise of her power-diva alter ego, Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé tapped into a vast craving for respect with the infectious, ubiquitous "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." Although it was only the second song she released as a married woman, Beyoncé doesn't see it as an homage to the fact that her longtime love went ahead and put a ring on it. "More than anything, the song celebrates being single," she tells me. "It's like, if you've been doing all you can and it's not happening for you, go out and have you a good old time. Put on your sexy dress and move on."

She considers that. "I know I'm stronger in the songs than I really am," she says. "Sometimes I need to hear it myself. We all need to hear those empowering songs to remind us." This from a woman who has sold 100 million records, won seven Grammys, launched her own fashion label (House of Deréon), and starred in popcorn flicks like The Pink Panther and Dreamgirls, as well as the small, serious Cadillac Records, in which she plays a broken-down Etta James. Consider her empowered.

Before getting married, Beyoncé had endured fewer serious relationships than most college sophomores. And while her courtship with Jay-Z could not have been more public—immortalized in a multimedia scrapbook of duets and video clips of them popping champagne corks in speedboats—they made the decision not to let it define them, opting for a private wedding in New York with 40 guests in April 2008. Clearly, this potentially blingiest of couples wants to keep a little something for themselves. At one point, while telling a story about her hard-to-impress 4-year-old nephew, Beyoncé refers to the boy's "Uncle Jay," only to retract it in a fit of giggling. "Oh Lord, I can't believe I just said that! That slipped. 'Cause I don't do that."

Maintaining the balance can't be easy, given the amount of time she spends in the spotlight—collecting Grammys, high-kicking with Hugh Jackman on the Academy Awards, serenading the Obamas with the Etta James hit "At Last." Beyoncé says she was so overcome by the sight of Barack and Michelle that her throat seized up and she nearly blew a crucial note. "I had to tell myself, 'They asked you to do this. You have to do a great job. This is their history. Calm down. Calm down.' I barely made it. Literally seconds before the song started, I was crying like a 5-year-old." But she got through it; no doubt the O-B-A-M-A spelled out in acrylic on the singer's left hand had a calming effect.

And so does the knowledge that there's more to life than monster fame. "I think she has learned that you have to work hard but you need your time off," says Gatson. "It's like, 'I'm not gonna go through this life doing all this and not have any fun.'"

In other words, catch a basketball game with your man whenever possible; have dinner at that out-of-the-way candlelit pizzeria in Brooklyn. "We try to sync our calendars," Beyoncé says. "I started working on my tour a year ago just to make sure that I had time at home. But you know, that's part of it. Any other woman who has to go to work and pick up the kids and make dinner—that's way harder than what I have to do. At least I can say I'm taking two weeks off and really take two weeks off."

Beyoncé smiles slightly to herself. "My priorities are slowly changing. So after this tour I might be tired and want to take two years off. I've worked hard enough to be able to do that. I'm in a very good place."

POP CULTURE: RADIO ONE PROTESTS CONGRESSIONAL BILL

CHECK OUT THIS STORY ON MONORITY BROADCASTERS FIGHTING TO STAY ON AIR, AGAINST A NEW PROPOSED CONGRESSIONAL BILL. THEN FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE CAUSE. WE CAN’T AFFORD TO HAVE ANOTHER MAJOR LAYOFF OF ANY TYPE OF COMPANY, MINORITY OR OTHERWISE.

Minority broadcasters keeping the heat on Congress

Radio One, in particular, is campaigning hard against performance royalties – and actively soliciting listeners to join it “in saving the future of black radio” With stations in Detroit, the company is putting intense pressure on Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), the author of the despised legislation.

Urged on by Radio One’s Detroit cluster, a couple of hundred protesters showed up outside Conyers’ hometown office prior to the 21-9 vote by the House Judiciary Committee, which Conyers chairs, approving H.R. 848 and sending the bill on to the full House. And while the protests that the bill would “kill black radio” didn’t stop it from passing the committee, the dire warnings of doom from African-American and Hispanic station owners had some committee members on the defensive to defend their votes for the RIAA-backed measure. It was almost surreal to see civil rights crusaders pitted against each other, as Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) became the chief critic of Conyers’ legislation and aligned herself with, of all people, Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA). One African-American legislator, Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) singled out Radio One for criticism, accusing company Chair Cathy Hughes and CEO Alfred Liggins of spreading “misinformation” on their stations and employing syndicated host Tom Joyner to “spread hysteria.”

Hughes is not letting up. She sent out an open letter to “My Radio One Family” calling for the defeat of the bill, which she said would put many black owned radio stations out of business. “The John Conyers Performance Tax Bill is the brain chaild of the foreign owned record industry who would receive at least 50% of the revenue that would be charged to radio stations in order for them to play music.” Editorials attacking the legislation aired on Radio One stations in all of the company’s markets.

Now we hear from Detroit that Hughes has updated her on-air attack on Conyers and his bill, pointing to the pending sale of heritage black owned WAMO in Pittsburgh as proof of the severity of the threat facing black radio. Listeners are once again being urged to bombard Conyers’ office with phone calls and email.

A companion to the Conyers bill is pending in the Senate. Once again, minority station owners and civil rights groups are leading the fight against S. 379. As the NAB and state broadcasting associations lobby against the legislation as well, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) is under pressure to hold a hearing specifically focusing on the impact performance royalties would have on minority- and women-owned radio stations.

RBR/TVBR observation: With larger Democratic majorities in the House and Senate and a Democrat in the White House, the multi-national record labels thought 2009 was going to be the year they could hide behind some famous recording artists and get a performance royalty bill signed into law. But the record companies hadn’t figured on an organized push back from minority broadcasters, which put RIAA on the wrong side of a civil rights battle – and made life very uncomfortable for some Capitol Hill Democrats.

TV REVIEW: TATTOO HIGHWAY

ROUND 3 OF MY MARATHON REALITY TV REVIEW. NEXT UP IS TATTO HIGHWAY. THE STORY IS RATHER INTERESTING. CHECK IT OUT. ENJOY

A&E tattoo reality show

The network HAS A reality series starring tattoo artist Thomas Pendelton, star of the network's previous tattoo-related docusoap "Inked."

In "Tattoo Highway," Pendelton and his wife and business partner, Monica (who also appeared on "Inked"), have transformed a 1970s tour bus into a mobile tattoo parlor. They will travel to cities including Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Salt Lake City, inking customers.

Executive producer Bob Horowitz said the traveling element will differentiate the show from previous tattoo docusoaps.

"All the other series have been based in tattoo parlors," he said. "Here the premise is this is the first tattoo parlor on wheels, and he goes where the stories are. Imagine all the things that can happen when you take something like this on the road and all the things that can happen."

In one episode, Pendelton mixes the cremated ashes of a deceased wife into the ink for a portrait on her husband's chest. In another, he uses UV ink for a tattoo visible only with a black light for a customer wanting a constant reminder of his mother.

"From the creation of the art to the environment that I tattooed in, it has always been about my customers' experience," Pendelton said. "In a street shop, it was easy to forget just how personal that experience should be. Rolling up and parking the shop right in the middle of someone's life, well, there is nothing more personal than that."

A&E plans to premiere the half-hour series in the spring.

"Highway" producers Horowitz and Lewis Fenton also just made a deal with Bravo for a new docudrama series called "Double Exposure," which follows fashion photographers Markus Klinko and Indrani, along with stylist GK Reid. The show will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at fashion and celebrity photography.

"Success in this business is finding talent that jumps off the screen, people who are unique and true to their business," Horowitz said. "They are the real deal and you see they are truly characters. The series is bound to be a success."

ALBUM REVIEW: EMINEM 'RELAPSE'

MY BIG HOMEY OVER AT THE BALTIMORE EXAMINER, MY HOMETOWN, REVIEWS EMINEM’S MUCH ANTICIPATED “RELAPSE” ALBUM. I’VE HEARD THINGS ABOUT IT, MOSTLY UNPLEASANT, BUT OF COURSE YOU SHOULD CHECK FOR YOURSELF, IF YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW. I READ THIS ARTICLE, & I HAVE TO SAY THAT I AGREE WITH IT, AS DO MANY PEOPLE. CHECK IT OUT. ENJOY

Eminem sells 600,000 records in first week

Does Eminem look different to you? Or is that just me?

Surprise! Surprise! Your favorite MC sold 600,000 copies of his latest CD, Relapse this week.

What does this tell us? Eminem is the best rapper, ever? Nope. Just that America is still infatuated and in an ongoing love/hate relationship with Mr. Mathers; a relationship that I ended 3 years ago...

What makes an album like Eminem's sell 600K copies? What makes an album with an unnecessary number of references to vicodin, valium, and/or rehab sell 600K copies in the first week? Is this what Eminem fans were waiting for?

I've purposely held off on my review of Eminem's album primarily because I wanted to be (as) objective (as possible) when reviewing Relapse. Based on my preliminary review of his first 2 singles, in my past article "Eminem is killing again," I'm assuming that many of you won't like this review. After listening to this album about 10-11 times:

Point blank...plain and simple...I believe Relapse is just that; a relapse.

Re-lapse: [v. ree-laps] 1. to fall or slip back into a former state, practice, etc;

Based on that definition, this album is absolutely a relapse. A slip back to Eminem circa 2001-2. A former state that we all laughed and sat jaw-dropped over 7-8 years ago. If you look at the album, as a whole, there is very little pertinent content and/or development of Eminem as an artist. I don't know Eminem personally. I'm sure that he has grown as a person; become more knowledgeable of the industry, the business, and his demons. Unfortunately, he chose not to truly highlight that growth and/or development in this work.

I sat excited, like most of you ready to listen to an album full of the life that Eminem lived over the past 4 years; his on/off again divorce; the trials of being a dad; the violent death of his best friend; overcoming the drug addiction that almost killed him. I wasn't expecting a dark album like 808's. I wasn't expecting a radio-friendly album. I wasn't expecting an album about Eminem turning to God and going back to church. I was expecting a more realistic (and less horrifying) account of his challenges over the past 4 years. I mean, come on. 4 years away from this fickle industry. He's lucky that he still has a fan base that find him relevant.

I will not dedicate this entire article to slamming this album. I will say that Eminem has infused some tantalizing flows and cadences that I haven't heard from him in the past. His flow seems to be a bit more fluid in some songs, and more appropriately choppy in others. It seems that his flow is more appropriately linked to the individual song.

All of the concerts on Beyonce's North American itinerary will have 1,000 specially-priced tickets made available with the exception of the artist's four-night residency at the Encore at Wynn Las Vegas.

Currently playing to sold-out arenas throughout Europe, Beyonce's "I AM..." World Tour is shaping up as one of 2009's hottest concert attractions. The artist kicked off the European leg of her world tour in late April with an electrifying sold-out performance in Zagreb, Croatia where more than 17,500 ecstatic fans—the largest single audience for an international artist in Croatian concert history—danced, sang-along and partied with the iconic superstar during a history-making two-hour show. Her first of four sold-out shows at London's 20,000-seat O2 Arena, Europe's largest in-door concert venue, inspired the Telegraph.co.uk to headline its review: "Beyonce Knowles raised the bar for what can be done in an arena show at the O2."

Beyonce is bringing her 2009 "I AM..." World Tour to North America this summer with a series of full-length concerts beginning at New York's Madison Square Garden in June and ending with a four-night residency at Encore at Wynn Las Vegas July 30-August 2. Overwhelming demand for premium packages and general tickets for the shows have made the "I AM..." tour one of the fastest selling concert events of the year. A second Madison Square Garden concert date has been added in New York City on June 22 (please see full itinerary following).

Beyonce is co-sponsoring food drives along her tour itinerary as part of the Show Your Helping Hand initiative, a national hunger relief campaign created by General Mills' Hamburger Helper in partnership with Beyonce and her Survivor Foundation. The campaign goal is to help Feeding America deliver more than 3.5 million meals to local food banks. Consumers can get involved in the effort by submitting codes on specially marked boxes of Hamburger Helper, by donating non-perishable food items at Beyonce's concerts in select cities across the U.S., or by donating money at showyourhelpinghand.com.

The most heavily-anticipated concert event of 2009, Beyonce's "I AM..." world tour marks the artist's first full-length concert series since 2007's sold-out "The Beyonce Experience" shows. Beyonce's current tour premieres live performances of songs from "I Am...Sasah Fierce," her latest international #1 chart-topping album.

Thierry Mugler, world-renowned designer, is serving as creative advisor and costume designer on Beyonce's "I Am..." world tour. He has designed 71 new costumes for the event, highlighted by his bold signature look.

The "I Am..." world tour production showcases the music and film superstar like you've never seen her. Beyonce's extraordinary all-female band joins her again to perform musical hits, classics, and surprises in a newly-created high-tech state-of-the-art concert environment. Winners of Beyonce's "Single Ladies" Video Dance contest will see themselves on-screen during one of the centerpiece sections of the "I AM..." extravaganza.

The Beyonce "I AM..." North American Concert Tour is co-sponsored by L'Oreal Paris and General Mills and produced by Live Nation and Music World Entertainment.

MOVIE NEWS: MICHAEL MOORE TO RELEASE NEW FILM IN OCTOBER

REPUBLICAN FAVE FILMMAKER MICHAEL MOORE IS BACK AT IT AGAIN. THIS TIME HIS TARGET IS THE ECONOMIC MELTDOWN THAT THE GLOBE IS INVOLVED IN CURRENTLY. HIS NEW FILM DEALS DIRECTLY WITH THAT, & I, FOR ONE, AM ANXIOUSLY AWAITING THE RELEASE SO I CAN CHECK IT OUT. OBVIOUSLY I WAS BEING FACEACIOUS ABOUT HIME BEING A FAVE OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, BUT I LIKE MOORE. I DIG HIS CURIOSITY. PEOPLE HAVE CRITICIZED HIM FOR SLANTING THE TRUTH TO HYPE HIS FILMS, BUT I AM A BELIEVER IN TRUTH SEEKING, SO I TAKE NOTHING AT FACE VALUE. HE DOES AROUSE DEBATE THOUGH, WHICH I LOVE, & IS SOMETHING THAT I LOVE TO ENGAGE IN MYSELF. THAT’S BASICALLY WHAT I WANT MY BLOG TO DO. ANYWAY, CHECK OUT THE ARTICLE. ENJOY.

New Michael Moore Film Coming in October

Oscar-winning filmmaker to explore the root causes of the global economic meltdown that have led to what he has described as "the biggest robbery in the history of this country."

BEVERLY HILLS, CA—Overture Films and Paramount Vantage have announced that Oscar-winner Michael Moore's new documentary feature will be released domestically on October 2, 2009. The as-yet-untitled film will explore the root causes of the global economic meltdown and take a comical look at the corporate and political shenanigans that culminated in what Moore has described as "the biggest robbery in the history of this country" - the massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer money to private financial institutions.

On this, the 20-year anniversary of his masterpiece "Roger & Me," Moore returns to the issue that began his career: the disastrous impact that corporate dominance and out-of-control profit motives have on the lives of Americans and citizens of the world. But this time the culprit is much bigger than General Motors, and the crime scene far wider than Flint, Michigan.

Says Moore: "The wealthy, at some point, decided they didn't have enough wealth. They wanted more—a lot more. So they systematically set about to fleece the American people out of their hard-earned money. Now, why would they do this? That is what I seek to discover in this movie."

Moore's new documentary, his first since 2007's widely-praised "Sicko," was first announced by Overture and Paramount Vantage International in May 2008 at the Cannes Film Festival and production began shortly afterward.

Chris McGurk and Danny Rosett, Overture's CEO and COO respectively, previously worked with Moore when they oversaw the release of "Bowling for Columbine" at MGM/United Artists.

"Everyone can relate to this subject matter and all have been affected," said McGurk and Rosett. "We think there should be plenty of people interested in hearing Michael's take on how exactly we got here and what we can do to move forward."

John Lesher, President of Paramount Film Group, added, "Michael is a master at capturing the most timely and critical issues shaping our world today. His unique, thought-provoking method of filmmaking is sure to bring dynamic insights into the state of the global economy that will have mass appeal to audiences worldwide."

The release date is a year and a day after the United States Senate voted to hand Wall Street a $700 billion bailout.

Moore has made three of the top six highest-grossing documentaries of all time including Cannes Palme d'Or winner "Fahrenheit 9/11," 2008 Academy Award nominee "Sicko," and "Bowling for Columbine," the Academy Award winner for Best Documentary in 2003. His debut film was 1989's groundbreaking "Roger and Me." Moore also created the Emmy-winning TV show, "TV Nation," and the Emmy-nominated show, "The Awful Truth," both of which featured his trademark style of presenting serious documentaries in humorous and engaging ways.

Jessica Simpson To Return To Reality Television

Jessica Simpson is to make a return to reality TV. The "With You" singer - who starred in MTV's "Newlyweds" with ex-husband Nick Lachey - will travel the world with a friend to find out what is deemed beautiful for new show "The Price of Beauty."

Jessica's representative said: "Jessica is indeed working on a new show, but network details have not been finalized at this time."

The 28-year-old blonde - who was criticized for her seemingly fuller figure earlier this year - signed on to the show after undergoing an intense exercise regime to makeover her figure.

Jessica recently defended her decision to star in "Newlyweds," insisting the program didn't destroy her relationship.

She explained: "The show made me understand what marriage is, what love is, what commitment is. In all honesty, I believe it did not affect our marriage. Because we enjoyed watching those episodes, and that will always be a time I cherish."
