CELEBRITY INTERVIEW: ANIKA NONI ROSE

CHECK OUT THIS INTERVIEW WITH ANIKA ROSE, OF STAGE AND DREAMGIRLS FAME. SHE’S ALSO STARRING IN THE JILL SCOTT HBO DRAMA, THE NO.1 LADIE’S DETECTIVE AGENCY. SHE’S DEFINITELY SEIZING THE MOMENT & TAKING ADVANTAGE OF EVERY OPPORTUNITY. CHEERS TO HER. ENJOY

Disney Princess Talks Emmys and Jennifer Hudson

Marc Malkin

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Anika Noni Rose must have wished upon a star, because her dream really came true. Ms. Rose is the starring voice in Disney's upcoming animated flick The Princess and the Frog.

"It's the most thrilling thing," says Rose, the Tony Award winner who you're likely to remember from her work as Lorrell opposite Jennifer Hudson and Beyoncé in Dreamgirls. "It's been a dream of mine since I was a little itty-bitty person to be a Disney voice."

It's also a history-making flick, with Disney's first African-American princess…

It must be a pretty intense feeling knowing you're the first African-American princess.

It's pretty amazing. For me, it means even so much more, because I have a nephew who is only 3 years old, and I will be the first princess he sees.

Are you hoping for a White House screening of the movie?

I'm ready! I mean, you look at those two little girls and they are the most beautiful creatures. You want to run up and hug them.

Let's talk about The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Did you read the books before getting the part of Grace Makutsi?

I had! I had read about three of the books, just randomly someone gave them to me and was like, "I think you'll like these."

What was it like filming in Botswana?

It was fantastic. [Director Anthony Minghella] had us there a lot longer than we needed to be. I was there for two months, but I only shot for 12 days. I was living in a hotel that used to be someone's house. The fact that he allowed me to be there for that amount of time really allowed me to take in what was around me.

You've won a Tony, were part of the Oscar-winning Dreamgirls and now there's Emmy buzz for No. 1 Ladies'. Are you like a good luck charm or something?

I do have to say that I'm very honored that HBO has decided to push it forward for this, because it's such a labor of love. It's nice to have someone standing behind you saying, "Look at this, pay attention to this, we love what they did."

Do you know yet if there's going to be a second season?

We don't know. I've gotten to the point where it doesn't worry me. About four or five years ago, I would have been like, "Ahh," but now I really feel like things don't always work out the way you plan, but they always work out.

Your No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency costar Jill Scott just had a baby, and your Dreamgirls costar Jennifer Hudson is pregnant. Have you offered to babysit for them already?

What is that? [Laughs] Everybody is popping out little ones. I'm just ready to bite a foot and a thigh. I love a baby thigh and foot in front of me so much.

How do you think they'll be as moms?

For a baby to come into a home where they are wanted, and they are wanted before they got there, that's a wonderful thing.

I've been a Jennifer Hudson fan since before Dreamgirls.

It's been a hell of a year for her. I'm happy for her and that her life is moving forward.

POP CULTURE: TOP MOVIE GIMMICKS PT. 1

HERE’S SOME MOVIE HISTORY FOR YOU. AS YOU ALL KNOW BY NOW I AM A CINEMA FREAK, MOVIE AFFICIENADO, AND ARBITER OF FILM…. IN OTHER WORDS, I REALLLLY LOVE MOVIES. I ALSO REALLLLLY LOVE HISTORY, SO IMAGINE HOW MUCH I LOVE MOVIE HISTORY. HAHA. DON’T WORRY, IVE LONG AGO EMBRACED MY INNER MOVIE GEEK. I LOVE IT. I CAN’T THINK OF ANYTHING BETTER TO BE A GEEK FOR. SO, IN THAT SPIRIT I WANT TO SHARE THE TOP MOVIE GIMMICKS OF ALL TIMES. IN CASE YOU DON’T QUITE KNOW WHAT A MOVIE GIMMICK IS ALLOW ME TO BRIEFLY ENLIGHTEN YOU WITH AN EXAMPLE, TODAY’S TO BE EXACT. HAVING SAID THAT YOU PROBABLY HAVE SURMISED THAT I’LL BE BREAKING THE GIMMICKS DOWN INTO A SERIES TO SPAN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS OR SO. SO STAY POSTED, KEEP LEAVING YOUR COMMENTS, & HAVE FUN. THE EXAMPLE IS 3-D. I FIGURE I’D BEGIN WITH THE MOST WIDELY KNOWN

The gimmick: When Monsters vs. Aliens hits theaters on March 27, it will be the surest sign yet that 3-D movies are in the midst of one of their periodic revivals. The animated film will join recent releases like My Bloody Valentine 3-D, Jonas Brothers: 3-D Concert Experience, and Coraline in busting off the silver screen (with the aid of a goofy set of glasses, of course.)

This isn't the first time pundits have heralded 3-D technology as the future of cinema. As early as 1922, a New York theater was showing a rudimentary series of 3-D films dubbed Movies of the Future. The format gained widespread acceptance in the 1950s with schlocky films such as Vincent Price's House of Wax. Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder (above) was possibly the pinnacle of the movement, and while the format gradually died down, there have been spurts of (unfortunate) interest ever since — Jaws 3-D, anyone?

The result: Box office returns from the recent 3-D slate have been mixed, but this latest revival may have legs. By the end of the year, more than a dozen films will be released in 3-D. Maybe the future is finally here to stay.

BIG SURPRISE MOVIEGOERS, & EVERYBODY ELSE, HAHA, STAR TREK STRIKES BIG IN ITS FIRST THREE DAYS. HOW MANY OF YOU GOT A CHANCE TO GO SEE IT? I HAVEN’T YET, BUT I’LL DEFINITELY BE CHECKING IT OUT SOON. LEAVE ME YOUR THOUGHTS AFTER YOU READ THE ARTICLE BELOW, WHICH GOES INTO DETAIL ABOUT ALL THE RECENT MOVIE NEWS, BOX OFFICE TOTALS, ETC. ENJOY.

Star Trek' draws $76.5 million

'Wolverine' earns $27 million in second weekend

By Carl DiOrio

Paramount's "Star Trek" launched in stellar fashion during the weekend as the sci-fi prequel soared to $76.5 million in estimated domestic boxoffice in its stretched first frame.

Thursday evening previews contributed $4 million to the total and midnight Thursday performances $3 million as the well-reviewed film re-invigorated the studio's storied franchise with an opening smack in the middle of an unusually broad range of prerelease forecasts. Paramount execs had said they'd be pleased if "Trek" traveled anywhere north of $50 million during its first session.

Fox's Hugh Jackman starrer "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" finished second during the weekend, falling 68% from its opening grosses to register $27 million and push its 10-day cume to $129.6 million. Warner Bros.' romantic comedy "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner, fell a modest 32% in its sophomore session to $10.5 million in third place, with a $30.2 million cume.

Summit Entertainment's urban-targeted action title "Next Day Air" bowed on the lower end of prerelease expectations with $4 million in sixth place.

Industrywide, the $150 million weekend notched a 20% improvement compared with the same frame last year, Nielsen EDI said.

Overall, 2009 is pacing 9% ahead of a year earlier, at $3.26 billion. The year-to-date uptick appears more modest because of seasonal fluctuations in the boxoffice calendar.

Among this weekend's limited openers, Sony Pictures Classics' Diego Luna-Gael Garcia Bernal starrer "Rudo y Cursi" unspooled in 70 bicoastal locations and grossed $210,647 million, or an acceptable $3,009 per site.

SPC's Atom Egoyan-directed "Adoration" bowed in 10 theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, grossing $43,734 million, or a sturdy $4,373 per venue.

And the Spanish historical drama "Little Ashes" from Regent Releasing and Here Media, opened in 12 locations, grossing $77,000, or a solid $6,416 per site.

Elsewhere in the specialty market, Vitagraph's fashion documentary "Valentino: The Last Emperor" added 10 playdates for a total of 37 and grossed $93,000, or an average $2,513 per engagement. "Valentino's" cume hit $830.040.

And Focus Features' Jim Jarmusch-directed thriller "The Limits of Control" added eight locations for a total of 11 and grossed $47,243, or $4,295 per site. Its cume is $127,018.

"Trek" made good use of positive word-of-mouth during the weekend to build on a core franchise fan base and tap into more youthful demos. Weekend grosses, fattened by outsized receipts in 138 Imax giant-screen venues, peaked with particularly robust Saturday night business.

Imax's $8 million in "Trek" loot bested by $2 million its previous top haul with last year's "The Dark Knight."

"Our network of auditoriums has been virtually sold out the entire weekend," Imax Filmed Entertainment chief Greg Foster said.

Helmed by J.J. Abrams, "Trek" features Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Capt. James Kirk and Spock, respectively. The bow marked a personal best for all three and for Abrams topped the $47.7 million opening of "Mission: Impossible III" in May 2006.

The successful "Trek" debut puts the prequel on track for a potential franchise-best theatrical run as its opening easily topped those of the previous 10 films in the space-exploration franchise.

The "Trek" franchise's most recent installment, 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis," unspooled with $18.5 million and rang up $43.3 million overall domestically. The top opener among all previous "Trek" releases came from 1996's "Star Trek: First Contact," which debuted with $30.7 million and rung up $92 million domestically.

Execs positioned "Trek" as a franchise reboot, much like Warners' 2005 Batman prequel "Batman Begins." Produced for a reported $140 million, "Trek" has Spyglass Entertainment as a 25% equity participant on the pic.

Rated R, "Air" was directed by hip-hop video director Benny Boom and stars rapper-actor Mos Def and Donald Faison (ABC's "Scrubs").

The release targeted core support among urban moviegoers, but no demographic information was available regarding opening audiences.

Looking ahead, Sony has this weekend's only wide opener: Imagine Entertainment's adaptation of the Dan Brown best-seller "Angels & Demons." Again helmed by Ron Howard -- with Tom Hanks reprising his role as Vatican expert Robert Langdon -- "Angels" effectively is a sequel to May 2006's "The Da Vinci Code," a $758 million worldwide grosser.

That will make for three straight weekends -- during the summer boxoffice's first three sessions -- in which a studio has opened a tentpole release. It will bear watching whether such high-profile films are able to co-exist successfully in the competitive marketplace as the balance of the all-important season will see a similar succession of major releases.

CELBRITY NEWS: MICHAEL JACKSON BEING SUED BY FORMER PUBLICIST

WHAT KIND OF BULL**** IS THIS? MICHAEL JACKSON’S FORMER PUBLICIST IS SUING HIM FOR 44 MILLION DOLLARS. NOW WHILE I’M ALL ABOUT GETTING WHATS OWED TO YOU, I BELIEVE EQUALLY AS STRONGLY IN PERFORMING YOUR JOB PROFESSIONALLY, SUCCESSFULLY, & WITH EXCELLENCE. NOW I’M NOT SURE IF ALL OF YOU ARE AWARE OF WHAT A PUBLICIST IS SUPPOSED TO DO IN THE WAY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES. IF YOU AREN’T EXACTLY SURE, ALLOW ME TO ENLIGHTEN YOU. IT WOULD BE MY PLEASURE TO DO SO. THE JOB OF A PUBLICIST IS TO ENSURE THAT THE NAME, IMAGE, LIKENESS, & PERSONA OF THEIR CLIENT IS ALWAYS AT THE MOST POSITIVE & BENEFICIAL TO THE PROSPERITY OF THE PARTICULAR CLIENT & THEIR CAREERS, AS WELL AS PERSONAL LIVES, TO AN EXTENT. I’M NOT MICHAEL JACKSON HISTORY BUFF, BUT I CAN SAY WITH ABSOLUTE CONFIDENCE THAT HIS IMAGE, PERSONA, & NAME ARE NOT IN ANY WAY LENDING THEMSELVES TO HIS PROSPERITY. I’M NOT EXONERATING FROM HIS PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIY IN THE MATTER, BUT I AM EXAMINING THIS PUBLICIST, & I’D LIKE VERY MUCH TO SEE A RECORD & HISTORY OF ALL THAT SHE’S DONE FOR THE UNDISPUTED KING OF POP. PERHAPS SHE’S ENTITLED TO MILLIONS OF DOLLARS, NOT 44 OF THEM, AS SHE’S SUING HIM FOR. I JUST HATE TO SEE WHEN PEOPLE JUMP ON A BANDWAGON, OF ANY KIND, LET ALONE ONE FOR A MAN WHO’S MEANT SO MUCH TO HUMANITY. IT GOES BEYOND THE MUSIC WITH MJ. BUT ANYWAY, CHECK OUT THE ARTICLE, & LEAVE YOUR COMMENTS. ENJOY

Michael Jackson Is Being Sued by Former Publicist for $44 million.

Raymone Bain, Michael Jackson’s former spokeswoman and personal general manager, is suing Jackson for $44 million. Bain filed a breach of contract lawsuit in Washington, D.C. claiming the pop star allegedly failed “to pay her for her services,” Reuters reported.

In a statement, Bain said she filed for the lawsuit “with deep regret” because she admires and respects Jackson, but he didn’t leave her with any other alternative to solve the matter.

“Unfortunately, Mr. Jackson has elected not to honor the financial obligations of our contractual relationship, despite numerous attempts to amicably resolve this matter,” Bain said.

She added that she is “disappointed” in Jackson’s “failure to honor his obligation.” Despite this though, she explains that her actions are on a “professional and business” level and not personal, according to E! Online.

“Michael Jackson, in my opinion, is the ‘King of Pop,’ she said, expressing that she has “no regrets.”

POP CULTURE: EMINEM TO APPEAR ON ONLINE VIDEO GAME

MARSHALL MATHERS IS BACK, & HE’S GOT HIS HANDS IN MULTIPLE VENTURES. NOT ONLY IS HIS ALBUM DROPPING IN A WEEK & A ½, BUT HE’S APPEARING ON A NEW VIDEO GAME. CHECK IT OUT. BACK TO THE MUSIC, I DON’T KNOW ABOUT ANYONE ELSE, BUT I’M READY FOR ANOTHER MNM LP. ENJOY THE ARTICLE

Eminem Gets Bloody In New Online '3 A.M.' Game

Game even includes snippet of forthcoming Eminem/ 50 Cent song 'Crack a Bottle.'

By James Montgomery

Well, now we know why Eminem checked himself into the (fictional) Popsomp Hills Rehabilitation Center: He planned on murdering everyone in the place.

It seems the rather elaborate viral campaign he launched late last month — which included being admitted to a faux-rehab facility (complete with working phone numbers and e-mail addresses) run by a mysterious Swiss therapist named, uh, Dr. Balzac — was just the first step in promoting his grisly, blood-soaked new video, for the track "3 A.M."

On Thursday (May 7), we entered the second step.

That's when Eminem posted a vaguely creepy message on his Twitter account ("They will never find me ...") with a link to the Popsomp Hills Web site, which had undergone a rather drastic face-lift, turning into a graphics-heavy interactive game that takes Em fans inside the "3 A.M." video. With a few clicks of the mouse, visitors can wander the dark hallways of the Center, poke and prod around Eminem's blood-spattered room and watch disturbing footage on security monitors of the rapper offing his victims, all while "3 A.M." blares in the background.

If fans dig a bit deeper, they'll also find a cell phone left open at the security desk, (with a text message from Dr. Balzac, plus a new phone number which allows fans to leave messages for patients — like Em and Ken Kaniff, a character who appears on Emimen's albums), a wall clock that automatically sets itself to 3 A.M. (and sends a half-naked Em running by a window), a severed finger in a bag and, hidden in a desk drawer, a bottle, which when broken, reveals a snippet of the Eminem/ 50 Cent track "Crack a Bottle."

There's also the blood-filled bath tub from the "3 A.M." video and the creepy mannequin Em kisses in the clip. Oh, and alternate angles of the slayings — a nurse, a security guard — from the video, too.

It's all pretty scary, and rather genius (and sort of like the "Alone in the Dark" video game, too), and it appears that there's still more horror to come: Fans will notice that there is a door to the left of the Popsomp Hills security desk rattles a bit when clicked on, but remains locked ... until a "No Access" sign pops up, along with a note

MUSIC NEWS: IRV GOTTI DROPS ASHANTI FROM MURDER, INC.

THIS MAY UPSET SOME PEOPLE, & EASE OTHERS, BUT IT’S GOING DOWN REGARDLESS. THE MURDER, INC PRINCESS HERSELF, MS. ASHANTI, OR SHOULD I SAY MRS. NELLY HAYES, LOL, HAS BEEN DROPPED BY LABEL HEAD IRV GOTTI, OR IRVING LORENZO, AS THE GOVERNMENT KNOWS HIM BY. READ BELOW FOR DETAILS, LEAVE ME YOUR THOUGHTS, & ENJOY.

Irv Gotti Says He's Dropping Ashanti From The Inc.

'The relationship has run its course,' label head says.

By Shaheem Reid

Irv Gotti says he and Ashanti, the Princess of the Inc., will soon be parting company. He said they haven't been on speaking terms for some time, and the label head/reality-TV star says there's nothing he can do but end their musical and business affiliation.

"The relationship has run its course," Gotti explained earlier this week while visiting the MTV offices. "The chemistry of what's needed — we're in two totally different places. You're talking to somebody that took her and shaped and molded her and put her out there for the world, and it blew up. We [hold the record] for the [fastest] selling debut by a female R&B artist — 503 [thousand]. We did it! My views and philosophies and her views and philosophies are not meeting up."

Ashanti's last LP, The Declaration — her first in four years — came out in June of last year on the Inc. and was created with virtually no input from Gotti. The album was her first in-studio project not to go platinum. Gotti says it's because the singer deviated from their winning formula and tag-team effort.

"I personally believe for her to be successful, it took the energy ... when you seen her, it was 30 n---as around her, and she's the princess so nice and pretty walking through," he said. "The music was great, but it was the energy that was created. It wasn't just her standing there and singing a song.

"We don't really speak or talk or anything like that," he continued. "It's sad in a way. But in another, it's like it's all good."

Well, maybe not that good. Gotti said it is best for them to part ways.

"I don't think she can win. She needs some guidance with that," Gotti added. "But she's not thinking like that. Really, I couldn't tell you what she's thinking. So that relationship has run its course and honestly, I'm gonna just drop her."

At press time, a rep for Ashanti had not granted MTV News' requests for comment.

Gotti told MTV News that he's maintained the rights to all of his artists, including Ashanti, Lloyd and of course Ja Rule. The exec says he's working on a deal to reunite with his fellow Def Jam alumni Lyor Cohen, Kevin Liles and Julie Greenwald over at the Warner Music Group. He says new albums by Lloyd, new rapper Newz and Rule are in the cooker. He explains the delay of Rule's The Mirror is because they are trying to craft a classic LP.

MOVIE NEWS: FOX DEVELOPING WOLVERINE SPINOFF FEATURING DEADPOOL

HOLD ON TO YOUR SEATS MARVEL/X-MEN/WOLVERINE/DEADPOOL FANS, THERE’S BREAKING NEWS FROM HEADQUARTERS: FOX IS DEVELOPING A DEADPOOL MOVIE AS A WOLVERINE: ORIGINS SPINOFF. I’M A FAN OF REYNOLDS, WHO SEEMS LIKE A RIGHTEOUS BROTHER ALL AROUND, SOMEONE I COULD CHILL WITH & LAUGH IT UP, SO I’M HAPPY FOR HIM. KEEP IT PUSHING BROSKI. ENJOY

'Deadpool' spinoff in works at Fox

Ryan Reynolds to reprise role in "Wolverine" spinoff

By Borys Kit

Fresh off the muscular performance of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" at the boxoffice, Fox has thrown into development a spinoff featuring Deadpool, the wise-cracking mercenary played in the film by Ryan Reynolds.

Reynolds is attached to reprise the character for what for now is simply being called "Deadpool." Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel Studios would act as producers.

Deadpool is known as "the merc with a mouth," a character that under Reynolds lived up to his billing in "Wolverine" until the end, when the movie deviated from the comic book persona, imbuing him with several superpowers and sewing his mouth shut.

It is understood that Reynolds would regain the ability to mouth off, with the movie going back to the roots of the character known for his slapstick tone and propensity to break the fourth wall. The character also was disfigured in "Wolverine," though it's unclear at this time how much the studio would want to mess with Reynolds' handsome mug.

The project is out to writers.

Fox considered a "Deadpool" spinoff early in "Wolverine's" development process, which is why it cast Reynolds. The actor was brought back in the month before the movie's release to shoot one of two "Easter egg" scenes that appeared after the end credits. The scene showed Deadpool alive, though when last audiences saw him, he appeared to be dead.

UTA-repped Reynolds next stars opposite Sandra Bullock in Disney's romantic comedy "The Proposal."
