Electro Dash: Jerome Chouinard-Rousseau’s Shoes Are Getting Feet Tapping

Jerome Chouinard-Rousseau’s parrot, Malibu, is making much too much noise. “She doesn’t always like to share the attention,” the 31-year-old designer says, coaxing the pretty bird out of her cage. Better to take her next door, to his boyfriend’s apartment, it’s decided, so that we can talk uninterrupted about Chouinard-Rousseau’s breakthrough shoe collection, which is characterized by wonderfully original urban-Victorian ankle boots and other eye-catching alternatives to the functional pump and flat. As beautiful as Malibu is, we don’t want her distracting us from the shoes.

Born in Québec and trained in London, Chouinard-Rousseau now lives and works out of a sunny apartment/studio in L.A.’s Beachwood Canyon. Before launching his own line, he worked for labels like Isabelle Fiore and Matthew Williamson. He also played keyboard in an electro-pop band called “Riviera F,” but that was just a hobby. (“We were slightly over-the-top, very aloof, very much about the performance,” he tells me shyly.) Shoes are, and have always been, Chouinard-Rousseau’s true love. “It’s hard to explain what they do, but it’s very emotional,” he says. “For me, I like them dead simple but distinctive. It’s too easy to do something big and busy.”

Fall is Chouinard-Rousseau’s third collection, and his strongest yet. “I had two muses: Kate Bush and this French band from the late ‘70s/early ‘80s called Elli & Jacno,” he explains. “The whole collection is that—glam, disco, very musical.” Take, for example, the Uno heel, which came down the Peter Pilotto runway in London last February. An elegant round-toe boot with U-shaped cutouts around the ankles, “it makes the feet look very precious,” Chouinard-Rousseau says. It also makes the feet look slender and enticing. Same goes for the Andromeda—a front-zip peep-toe suede ankle boot with a patent leather heel that I had the pleasure of wearing to the Met Costume Institute Gala recently (it really was a pleasure; they are remarkably comfortable). “I think when I started, everything was very ‘60s—sharp, modern,” he says. “As the collection has grown, it’s relaxed a little. There’s a lot of ‘70s luxe craftsmanship, a lot of soft leather.”

Jerome C. Rousseau shoes will be sold at Barneys and Net-a-porter this fall. Look for them also in Terry Gilliam’s new film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which screens at Cannes this week. It seems inevitable that they’ll soon be stars.

Mariel Concepcion, N.Y.

BET announced Tuesday (May 12) the host, nominees, performers and honorees for the 2009 BET awards during the taping of the network's music video countdown show "106 & Park." Hosted by actor/singer Jamie Foxx, the event will be held in Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium and will air on the network on June 28th at 8 p.m.

Leading the nominations with five nods each are Beyonce and T.I., the former in the running for Video of the Year for "Single Ladies" and "If I Were A Boy," Best Female R&B Artist (in which she competes against Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole, Jennifer Hudson and Jazmine Sullivan), Best Actress and Viewers Choice, and the latter vying for Best Collaboration for "Live Your Life" with Rihanna and "Ain't I" with Yung L.A. and Young Dro, Best Male Hip-Hop Artist and Video of the Year for "Live Your Life."

Lil Wayne and T-Pain received four nominations apiece. T-Pain will square off with The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Ne-Yo and Jamie Fox for Best Male R&B Artist, while Wayne is up against T.I., Kanye West, Young Jeezy and Rick Ross for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist. Meanwhile, Keir Hilson will compete for three awards, including Best Female R&B artist and Best Collaboration.

The nominees for some of the other popular categories included: Day 26, GS Boys, N.E.R.D., The Roots and Three 6 Mafia for best group; Keri Hilson, Kid Cudi, Ryan Leslie, M.I.A. and Jazmine Sullivan for Best New Artist; and Musiq Soulchild, Raphael Saadiq, Seal, Solange and Jazmine Sullivan for the BET J Award.

"It's a big deal for us because I feel like there are more 'different' in the world than 'the same,' and the different is not always that easily celebrated," N.E.R.D.'s Pharrell, who is nominated for Best Group, said during the taping. "It's a blessing, and we really appreciate it and are humbled by it," Que from Day 26, who were also nominated in the category, said.

Among the night's confirmed performers are Beyonce, Maxwell and Ne-Yo. The latter will be searching for a background dancer to perform with him during the show by way of the "Bringing It To The Awards" competition on BET.com. Contestants can enter from May 6 - June 4 on the site.

CELEBRITY NEWS: PRINCE WILLIAM SET TO ANNOUNCE ENGAGEMENT

Prince William Reportedly Set To Announce Engagement To Kate Middleton

Britain's Prince William is set to announce his engagement within the next few months, according to well-informed sources. The future king - who made his first public appearance with girlfriend Kate Middleton for five months at a polo match over the weekend - is odds-on with bookmakers to propose to Kate by the end of this year after receiving a sudden rush of knowledgeable bets.

William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: "Almost all the best suggest that the announcement will come in the next few months."

Bookmakers have now slashed their odds from 4/6 to 1/2.

William has previously said he doesn't want to get married until he's at least 28 - a birthday he will celebrate next June.

The news comes days after William and Kate were pictured looking smitten with each other after the prince had taken part in a polo match in Berkshire.

It was the first time they had been seen together in months and sources say they are trying to keep their relationship as low-profile as possible.

One said: "William and Kate have gone to great lengths this year to keep out of the public eye."

William, 26, was joined in the match at Coworth Park Polo Club by his younger brother Prince Harry.

POP CULTURE: TOP 10 SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE TATTOOS

EVER WANTED A TAT BUT YOU WEREN’T EXACTLY SURE OF WHAT YOU WANT, OR SHOULD GET, DEPENDING ON WORK, FAMILY, SPOUSE, ETC? IF SO, & IF NOT, HAHA, CHECK OUT THIS TOP 10 LIST OF SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE TATS FROM MY GOOD FRIENDS AT ASKMEN.COM. ENJOY, & PROCEED WITH CAUTION, PER THEIR ADVISEMENT. LOL

Top 10: Socially Acceptable Tattoos

Getting inked is common now, but not all tats are in good taste. Stay normal with these socially acceptable tattoos.

By Alex Rivera, Entertainment Correspondent

Page 1:

Gone are the days when it was cool or even trendy to sport body art depicting markings from tribes you don’t belong to or obscure symbols from languages you don’t speak (aka tattoos guys should never get). However, there is a bright side, men. In addition to the sexy Kat Von D, one can still get a socially acceptable tattoo without facing the ramifications a poorly selected tattoo can result in. If you’re planning on getting a tattoo sometime in the near future give it careful consideration and remember this example: We know of a trial lawyer who has a tattoo of a small spider strategically placed on his wrist, underneath his watch. During particularly tough litigations, he removes his watch to reveal said tattoo and then slowly scratches his wrist, so as to say “don’t f*ck with me.” Whether or not his strategy works requires another forum, but this is kind of cool for a lawyer sporting a socially acceptable tattoo.

Here are a few more examples of socially acceptable tattoos that we like.

Page 2: Cover-up tattoos

As the old adage goes, to err is human and to forgive is divine. Admitting to the error of a large calf tattoo portraying your love of soccer and fire (or an amalgam of both) is the first step toward forgiveness; the second step is getting a talented tattoo artist to conceal the “art.” Then again, sometimes a tattoo is necessary to turn your flaming-Dr. Pepper leg burn into a spot on a pretty kitty cat. This is also acceptable, so long as that “kitty” is actually a “bulldog” or other such manly dog.

Page 3: Prison tattoo

Whereas prison tattoos may not be acceptable in “general” society, multiple teardrops beside one’s eye, certain key gang symbols or any messaging with the intent to intimidate can often serve a functional purpose in places where the assertion of one’s dominance is essential for survival. Such places include prison, prison camps, prison gyms, prison cafeterias, prison shower rooms, and mid-‘90s movies about inner-city high schools.

Page 4: Heritage tattoo

Size limits are very much in effect on this one, but small, well-drawn tattoos that highlight certain widely embraced symbols of one’s cultural heritage are acceptable. Examples could include shamrocks for an Irishman or a yin and yang for a person of Japanese descent (although this is a bit clichéd). Unacceptable examples include anything that propagates negative cultural stereotypes such as drunken Irish leprechauns, Italian pizza pies or Colombian kilos of cocaine.

Page 5: Religious tattoos

In many religions, tattoos can hold a deep significance and are often thought of as a vehicle upon which to become closer to one’s personal deity. Hinduism, for example, is the source of countless tattoo designs depicting popular gods such as Shiva, Ganesha and Kali or sacred symbols like "Om." For Hindus and members of countless other religions, tattoos are thought of as tangible symbols of the peoples’ strong spirit and concern with faith and survival.

Page 6: Original tattoo (a design you created yourself)

In the event that you have some semblance of artistic talent, some of the best and most meaningful designs could very well be those you come up with yourself. Our advice is to seek opinions of your design from at least one good friend and one family member before you start shopping your “El Capitan Awesome” emblem around to tattoo artists.

Page 7: Personal-mantra tattoo

Frankly, this can be left up to your best judgment. What qualifies as a “personal mantra” differs from person to person. Our advice is to skip the profanity unless absolutely necessary and keep the font size relatively small, neat and clean.

Page 8: Military tattoo

Everyone seems to have an old uncle who loves nothing more than to show off his World War II tattoo on his left bicep as he engages you in an impromptu pushup contest during Christmas dinner. What may have been overlooked during this unnecessary feat-of-strength competition is that tattoos signifying a tour of duty are not only pretty badass, but also serve as a timeless sign of respect for the armed forces that guard our country each and every day.

Page 9: Memorial tattoos

It’s unfortunate, but the passing of an immediate family member gives you free reign to get a tattoo of pretty much anything you want, as long as it is a sign of respect and not a convenient excuse to get that “uber-cool” tribal arm band you’ve had your eye on for a while. Simple text is preferable with memorial tattoos, but if you do go with an image of someone special make sure you spend enough money to ensure that it's a good portrait.

Page 10: Passion/profession tattoos

Unless you are a professional athlete, a football signifying “sports” is unacceptable. On the other hand, a lawyer getting a small tattoo of the scales of justice on his shoulder is acceptable.

Page 11: Offspring tattoo

A tattooed portrait (or their name and date of birth) of your son or daughter is a great way to immortalize them and is a reminder you can take anywhere -- even to prison!

POP CULTURE: TOP MOVIE GIMMICKS PT. 1

HERE’S SOME MOVIE HISTORY FOR YOU. AS YOU ALL KNOW BY NOW I AM A CINEMA FREAK, MOVIE AFFICIENADO, AND ARBITER OF FILM…. IN OTHER WORDS, I REALLLLY LOVE MOVIES. I ALSO REALLLLLY LOVE HISTORY, SO IMAGINE HOW MUCH I LOVE MOVIE HISTORY. HAHA. DON’T WORRY, IVE LONG AGO EMBRACED MY INNER MOVIE GEEK. I LOVE IT. I CAN’T THINK OF ANYTHING BETTER TO BE A GEEK FOR. SO, IN THAT SPIRIT I WANT TO SHARE THE TOP MOVIE GIMMICKS OF ALL TIMES. IN CASE YOU DON’T QUITE KNOW WHAT A MOVIE GIMMICK IS ALLOW ME TO BRIEFLY ENLIGHTEN YOU WITH AN EXAMPLE, TODAY’S TO BE EXACT. HAVING SAID THAT YOU PROBABLY HAVE SURMISED THAT I’LL BE BREAKING THE GIMMICKS DOWN INTO A SERIES TO SPAN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS OR SO. SO STAY POSTED, KEEP LEAVING YOUR COMMENTS, & HAVE FUN. THE EXAMPLE IS 3-D. I FIGURE I’D BEGIN WITH THE MOST WIDELY KNOWN

The gimmick: When Monsters vs. Aliens hits theaters on March 27, it will be the surest sign yet that 3-D movies are in the midst of one of their periodic revivals. The animated film will join recent releases like My Bloody Valentine 3-D, Jonas Brothers: 3-D Concert Experience, and Coraline in busting off the silver screen (with the aid of a goofy set of glasses, of course.)

This isn't the first time pundits have heralded 3-D technology as the future of cinema. As early as 1922, a New York theater was showing a rudimentary series of 3-D films dubbed Movies of the Future. The format gained widespread acceptance in the 1950s with schlocky films such as Vincent Price's House of Wax. Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder (above) was possibly the pinnacle of the movement, and while the format gradually died down, there have been spurts of (unfortunate) interest ever since — Jaws 3-D, anyone?

The result: Box office returns from the recent 3-D slate have been mixed, but this latest revival may have legs. By the end of the year, more than a dozen films will be released in 3-D. Maybe the future is finally here to stay.
