POP CULTURE: TOP MOVIE GIMMICKS PT. 1

HERE’S SOME MOVIE HISTORY FOR YOU. AS YOU ALL KNOW BY NOW I AM A CINEMA FREAK, MOVIE AFFICIENADO, AND ARBITER OF FILM…. IN OTHER WORDS, I REALLLLY LOVE MOVIES. I ALSO REALLLLLY LOVE HISTORY, SO IMAGINE HOW MUCH I LOVE MOVIE HISTORY. HAHA. DON’T WORRY, IVE LONG AGO EMBRACED MY INNER MOVIE GEEK. I LOVE IT. I CAN’T THINK OF ANYTHING BETTER TO BE A GEEK FOR. SO, IN THAT SPIRIT I WANT TO SHARE THE TOP MOVIE GIMMICKS OF ALL TIMES. IN CASE YOU DON’T QUITE KNOW WHAT A MOVIE GIMMICK IS ALLOW ME TO BRIEFLY ENLIGHTEN YOU WITH AN EXAMPLE, TODAY’S TO BE EXACT. HAVING SAID THAT YOU PROBABLY HAVE SURMISED THAT I’LL BE BREAKING THE GIMMICKS DOWN INTO A SERIES TO SPAN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS OR SO. SO STAY POSTED, KEEP LEAVING YOUR COMMENTS, & HAVE FUN. THE EXAMPLE IS 3-D. I FIGURE I’D BEGIN WITH THE MOST WIDELY KNOWN

The gimmick: When Monsters vs. Aliens hits theaters on March 27, it will be the surest sign yet that 3-D movies are in the midst of one of their periodic revivals. The animated film will join recent releases like My Bloody Valentine 3-D, Jonas Brothers: 3-D Concert Experience, and Coraline in busting off the silver screen (with the aid of a goofy set of glasses, of course.)

This isn't the first time pundits have heralded 3-D technology as the future of cinema. As early as 1922, a New York theater was showing a rudimentary series of 3-D films dubbed Movies of the Future. The format gained widespread acceptance in the 1950s with schlocky films such as Vincent Price's House of Wax. Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder (above) was possibly the pinnacle of the movement, and while the format gradually died down, there have been spurts of (unfortunate) interest ever since — Jaws 3-D, anyone?

The result: Box office returns from the recent 3-D slate have been mixed, but this latest revival may have legs. By the end of the year, more than a dozen films will be released in 3-D. Maybe the future is finally here to stay.

Bollywood Comes to Hulu

The free online video service makes deal with Saavn to stream contemporary hit films from India.

NEW YORK, NY—Saavn, the world's largest digital distributor and marketer of Bollywood entertainment and Hulu, an online video service that offers hit TV shows, movies and clips at Hulu.com and other online destination sites—all for free, anytime in the U.S., have teamed up to stream Bollywood films. The initial launch will include five contemporary hits from India, including "Sarkar," Bollywood's homage to the "Godfather." All films include English subtitles and can be found at Hulu.com in the Feature Film category.

"Making some of the best Bollywood films available on Hulu is very exciting to us," said Vin Bhat, co-founder and chief executive officer of New York-based Saavn. "One of Saavn's goals is to make Bollywood more accessible for everyone and by having these films on Hulu, we believe that more people in the U.S. will open up to the genre that is revered by billions around the world."

At launch, Hulu and Saavn will offer these Bollywood hits:

"Sarkar" (2005) - The family politics of an Indian mafia family play out on a large scale in this critically acclaimed drama. Known as the Godfather of Bollywood, this film stars beloved actor Amitabh Bachchan; in a BBC poll, Bachchan was voted as the most important star of the millennium—beating Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, and Sir Lawrence Olivier, among others.

"Hera Pheri" (2000) - Three unemployed friends accidentally intercept a ransom demand and try to make a quick buck off the misunderstanding in this rip-roaring comedy hit. This classic Indian comedy was so successful, it spawned one of Bollywood's first sequels. It stars Ashkay Kumar, Bollywood's golden boy whose films earn more money in the industry than any other star.

"Deewana" (1992) - This dramatic classic was the "king" of the Bollywood's first release, Shah Rukh Khan. Khan is arguably one of the world's most recognized figures; recently, he was the only actor named to the TIME 100, a list of global influencers. The film follows a promising singer who soon is thought to be murdered by his greedy uncle and cousins. Years later, he suddenly reappears and creates confusion for those he left behind.

Other films are romantic comedy "Hulchul" (2004) and "Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke" (2000), starring global icon and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai. More films will be released throughout the year.

MOVIE NEWS: KEANU REEVES TO STAR IN DR. JECKYLL/MR. HYDE REMAKE

ANOTHER HORROR CLASSIC REMAKE? ARE WE GROWINGN WEARY OF THESE, MOSTLY BAD HORROR UPDATES? OR ARE WE READY FOR FRESH TAKES ON OLD HORROR GEMS? ON A PERSONAL NOTE, I’M ALWAYS READY FOR UPDATES, ESPECIALLY ON MOVIES THAT I FEEL WOULD BENEFIT FROM BEING REMADE, & THEREFORE EXPOSING THEMSELVES TO AN ENTIRELY NEW AUDIENCE. I’M NOT QUITE CERTAIN WHAT TO MAKE OUT OF THE MOVIE’S STAR, MR. REEVES. NOT THAT I DON’T LIKE KEANU, BECAUSE IN ALL ACTUALITY I RESPECT HIS INTELLECT & LOVE OF LITERATURE. HE OFTEN PLAYS AGAINST HIS PERSONALITY, WHICH LEADS PEOPLE TO BELIEVE HE’S TED FROM BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURES. IN ANY EVENT, I DON’T KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT HIM TACKLING THIS ROLE. HE IS UNDOUBTEDLY AT THE TOP OF THE SCI-FI MOVIE STAR PLATEAU, WITH WILL SMITH, BUT HORROR IS A DIFFERENT ANIMAL. I DON’T WANT TO GET TOO DEEP INTO CINEMA, I’LL SAVE THAT FOR MY FORTHCOMING ‘MOVIE GEEKZ’ BLOG, WHICH WILL BE UBER DOPE. I’LL KEEP YOU POSTED. ANYWAY, CHECK OUT THE ARTICLE, & LEAVE A COMMENT. ENJOY

Keanu Reeves to star in updated "Jekyll" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Keanu Reeves is about to develop a split personality as the star of a modern retelling of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."

Universal Pictures is developing the feature, with Justin Haythe, writer of "Revolutionary Road," penning the script. Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, writer-director of the "Pusher" trilogy of gritty thrillers, is in negotiations to direct the project, titled "Jekyll."

Robert Louis Stevenson's novella about a doctor who scientifically develops an evil self has become so pervasive in popular culture that the phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" conjures the idea of a split personality. The story has been translated to the screen and stage dozens of times. Among the adaptations are comedy versions, kids' stories ("Jekyll and Heidi") and gender-switch tales (1995's "Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde"). The story has undergone modern iterations as recently as 2007, when the BBC aired a miniseries that set the story in the present as Hyde ran amok in London.

Plot details for this "Jekyll" are being kept locked in the laboratory.

Universal clearly is enamored with the tale; it also has been developing a take on it with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, but the two adaptations couldn't be more different.

Del Toro, who has an affinity for Gothic horror as well as creature features, aims to stick more closely to the Stevenson tale. His project is on the back burner, though, as he works on "The Hobbit" for New Line and MGM, a project that's expected to take up the next five years.

Refn's indie crime biopic "Bronson," starring Tom Hardy, premiered this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Haythe wrote the script for "The Clearing," the Robert Redford-starring kidnapping thriller. He is working on the remake of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea."

Reeves most recently starred in the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

MTV MOVIE AWARDS PREVIEW

GET READY FOR THE MTV MOVIE AWARDS. YES, IT IS THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN. I KNOW, I KNOW, TIME TRULY FLIES WHEN, WELL WHEN WE CONTINUE TO BREATHE. HAHA. ANYWAY, ENJOY.

'Twilight,' 'Slumdog' lead MTV nominees

Heath Ledger to compete posthumously as best villain

NEW YORK – It's "Twilight" versus "Slumdog Millionaire" at this year's MTV Movie Awards.

The vampire blockbuster and Oscar-winning Indian romance have six nominations each, including best movie, MTV announced Monday. "Slumdog" star Dev Patel and "Twilight" vampire Robert Pattinson are both nominated for the male breakthrough performance award. The other contenders are Ben Barnes ("The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian"), Bobb'e J. Thompson ("Role Models") and Pattinson's "Twilight" co-star Taylor Lautner.

Mark Burnett, who produces the freewheeling ceremony, said either film has a great chance of winning best picture.

"Twilight" has "certainly touched a part of America and young girls are totally in love with what the movie stands for and (with) romance," Burnett said in an interview. "And, on the other hand, I have to say, all of my kids loved 'Slumdog Millionaire.' There's just something so uplifting about what that movie stands for."

Other nominated films include "Iron Man," "The Dark Knight" and "High School Musical 3: Senior Year."

Kate Winslet, who won an Oscar for her dramatic role in "The Reader," is up for best female performance, along with Angelina Jolie ("Wanted"), Anne Hathaway ("Bride Wars"), Kristen Stewart ("Twilight") and Taraji P. Henson ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button").

Nominees for best male performance are Christian Bale ("The Dark Knight"), Robert Downey Jr. ("Iron Man"), Shia LaBeouf ("Eagle Eye"), Vin Diesel ("Fast & Furious") and "High School Musical" heartthrob Zac Efron.

Efron's co-star (and girlfriend) Vanessa Hudgens will challenge Miley Cyrus for the breakthrough performance female award. Their competition includes "Slumdog" beauty Freida Pinto and Ashley Tisdale, another "HSM" star.

The golden popcorn trophy for best kiss -- one of the event's signature unconventional categories -- could be handed to one of six big-screen duos, including Efron and Hudgens, Pinto and Patel, Stewart and Pattinson, or Sean Penn and James Franco, who co-starred in "Milk."

Ledger, who won a posthumous Oscar for his menacing performance as the Joker in "The Dark Knight," is also nominated in the best villain category.

MTV usually introduces a new category or two each year: This year, a golden popcorn will be awarded to the "best song from a movie." The nominees are Cyrus' "The Climb" (from the new "Hannah Montana" film); the "Twilight" song "Decode" by Paramore; the "Slumdog" anthem "Jai Ho"; and the Bruce Springsteen ballad "The Wrestler" from the movie starring Mickey Rourke.

Votes can be cast online at MTV's Web site through May 27 for all categories except best movie. MTV said voting in that category remains open until May 31, when the show will air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, Calif. "Saturday Night Live" star Andy Samberg is the host.

Burnett said the key to a successful movie-awards show is to let awkward moments pan out. Among last year's highlights: Franco and Seth Rogen pulled out a bag of fake marijuana on stage.

"I will tell you right now -- there are three big things" that are part of the show, Burnett said. "I would say personally in my three years of producing the MTV Movie Awards live, the biggest thing that I can think of is going to be happening this year."

BOX OFFICE: WOLVERINE ORIGINS OPENING DAY

`Wolverine' slashes his way to $35M on opening day

Riding dolo has paid dividends for Hugh Jackman and his "X-Men" offspring.

Jackman's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" launched the summer movie season by taking in $35 million on its opening day Friday.

According to Hollywood.com box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, that puts "Wolverine" solidly in line with the three previous "X-Men" movies in which Jackman costarred.

The final chapter of that trilogy, "X-Men: The Last Stand," was the most successful with $45.1 million on opening day.

But "Wolverine" outdid the first two movies. "X-Men" had an opening day of $20.8 million, while "X2: X-Men United" did $31.2 million on its first day.

TWILIGHTERS REJOICE. I’M SURE YOU’RE ALREADY AWARE, BUT IT’S STILL MY JOB TO ENLIGHTEN. ENJOY

Twilight' sequel finds Wolf Pack

Five American Indian newcomers join 'New Moon'

By Steven Zeitchik

NEW YORK -- Summit has brought on a cast of American Indian actors to star in the werewolf- and vampire-themed "New Moon," the sequel to "Twilight."

The studio has hired Chaske Spencer, Bronson Pelletier, Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon and Tyson Houseman to form the ensemble Wolf Pack, who in Stephenie Meyer's novel take the side of the humans in their fight against the evil breed of vampires.

Taylor Lautner previously had been cast as Jacob Black, also a member of the Wolf Pack.

Summit noted that all of the actors are of American Indian descent, with Sioux, Purepecha and Hualapai among the tribes represented. Meyer made the announcement on her Web site after weeks of rumors that director Chris Weitz was close to casting members of the Wolf Pack.

All five announced Monday will make their big-screen debuts in the film.

CELEBRITY NEWS

My ace, Mickey rourke, is rumored to be traveling overseas to get some corrective plastic surgery done. Now all of us cinema lovers, or recent rourke article readers, know mickey was considered a hottie, & a movie star back in the eighties, early nineties, that was, until he chose a different, what many, ok ok, most called bonkers, or just plain stupid. Whatever your opinion was, or is, the dude is absolutely talented, & I certainly wish him the best in getting the surgery. Check out the story & leave me with your thoughts

Argentine news site Momento 24 reports that Rourke will travel to Argentina this summer to have a doctor fix him up. Rourke has admitted that he "went to the wrong guy" to have previous work done on his nose and cheekbones due to injuries sustained from boxing: "I had to have cartilage taken from my ear to rebuild my nose and a couple of operations to scrape out the cartilage because the scar tissue wasn't healing properly. That was one of the most painful operations, but the worst was hemorrhoids."

CELEBRITY COUPLE

Slumdog millionaire costars dev patel & freida pinto, the lovely freida pinto, who I’ve been trying to get an interview with, are confirmed as a freaking couple. Excuse my disappointment & tone, lol, but I’m a tad salty. 1st salma hayek, then FREIDA. IT’S A BIT MUCH TO TAKE IN THE SAME WEEK. I KNOW SALMA HAS BEEN ENGAGED FOR A MINUTE NOW, BUT UNTIL THE VOWS ARE EXXCHANGED THERE’S STILL A CHANCE. HELL, IN TODAY’S SOCIETY OF MINUTE MARRIAGES, I’LL JUST BIDE MY TIME, & SEE WHAT HAPPENS. HAHA. I DO WISH THEM THE BEST THOUGH, IN ALL HONESTY. BACK TO PATEL & PINTO. CHECK OUT THE ARTICLE & LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK

After much speculation about the nature of the relationship involving Slumdog Millionaire stars Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, Patel's mother Anita has confirmed to a British newspaper that the pair are very much a couple.

"First it was the film and now everything else seems to have slotted into place," Mrs. Patel is quoted as saying in Monday's Daily Mirror.

"Life can't get any better for him. Freida is really beautiful, and I am really happy for them."

Her comments come just days after Patel, 19, jetted to Israel to spend a whirlwind date with the Mumbai beauty, 24. "Yes, we knew he was flying to Israel to see her," said Patel's mother.

The pair rendezvoused in Tel Aviv as Pinto took time off from filming her latest movie in Jerusalem. The couple spent a few hours together in a hotel before emerging for a stroll around the harbor and an early champagne dinner at a seaside restaurant.

Onlookers said Pinto couldn't keep her hands off Patel. The couple spent their time at the table smooching and holding hands to the delight of a group of Japanese tourists who happened to pass by.

Shortly afterwards, Patel hopped a taxi to the airport to fly back to London, while Pinto returned to her base at the American Colony Hotel in East Jerusalem.

POP CULTURE

In case you didn’t know, & don’t worry, you wouldn’t be alone in that ignorance, lol, today is “buy indie day”. Check out this article for all of the appropriate information. I’m a huge fun of all things indie. I love what that represents, especially being an independent filmmaker, contractor, entrepreneur, artist, etc, & so on. I always encourage independence of thought, action, expression, action, & feeling. But enough of me; As always enjoy

Buy indie day

May 1

Did you know today has been declared Buy Indie Day? Thousands nationwide will recognize the day by stopping in at one of their favorite independent bookstores and making a purchase. Don't want to buy a book? Buy an audio book, a CD, a DVD, buy something! Since the economy is terrible right now, it's a wonderful way to support your local independent bookstores.

Why shop Indie?
When you shop at an independently owned business, your entire community benefits:

The Economy
-Spend $100 at a local and $68 of that stays in your community. Spend the same $100 at a national chain, and your community only sees $43.
-Local businesses create higher-paying jobs for our neighbors.
-More of your taxes are reinvested in your community--where they belong.

The Environment
-Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint.
-Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify your community.

The Community
-Local retailers are your friends and neighbors—support them and they’ll support you.
-Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains.

More independents means more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community. The American Booksellers Association has put together a list of studies that document the positive economic impact of locally owned businesses, and how they contribute significantly more money to the local economy than do retail chains. You can read them here.

Want to participate? You can RSVP, invite friends and discuss with other indie shoppers on Buy Indie Day's Facebook page, and find an indie bookstore near you on the Indie Store Finder map.

IndieBound supports Independent Business Alliances around the country. To find an alliance near you, visit AMIBA or BALLE.
